A month into the new baseball season and we have a few surprises developing.

In the Big Apple, the New York Yankees are challenging for the American League East lead…that doesn’t fall into the “Surprising” category…but across town, the New York Mets are fighting the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East division, which is. Yes, it’s still early, but they have had a decent start to the season.

The Mets, who have played second fiddle to the Yankees since the glory days of Hernandez, Dykstra, et al, were sitting in fourth place in the NL East at this time last year, with a 10-13 record and plenty of doom and gloom surrounding the team.  As of this past Sunday, they are 14-11 and a half game behind Philadelphia.

They start a series with the Reds in Cincinnati to kick-off the week.

San Diego Padres: The San Diego Padres are a bit of surprise team as well, currently leading the NL West (as of Sunday, they’re 1.5 games up on the San Francisco Giants).

Despite the early division lead, the Padres are still longshots to hang on a win the NL West, listed currently at +1100 at most online sportsbooks. The club allowed a league-high 143 errors last season with a league low .977 fielding percentage. The pitching staff struck out a league-low 911 batters while walking a league-high 629. The Nationals are looking to make the move towards respectability.

The Nationals enter today's game with a seven-game win streak extending from the end of last season, leaving them three shy of their franchise record for consecutive wins.

2010 World Series Predictions and Odds – MLB World Series 2010

Spring Training is right around the corner and with that, it’s time to check the 2010 World Series futures odds for all 30 MLB teams.

The St. Louis Cardinals were able to re-sign outfielder Matt Holliday, which was their biggest offseason priority. At times it looked like Holliday would sign elsewhere, but in the end the Cardinals (who are 13/1 to win the World Series next season) were able to keep the middle of the order intact.

Tim Lincecum asks record $13 million in salary arbitration

San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum asked $13 million for baseball betting in salary arbitration, a record for a player eligible for the first time, and Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez closed in on a five-year contract with the Mariners.
Seventy-one players reached agreements with their teams ahead of yesterday’s exchange of figures, leaving 38 in arbitration.
The Giants offered $8 million to Lincecum, 40-17 with a 2.90 ERA since he was brought up early in the 2007 season. He won the NL CY Young Award in his each of first two full seasons, becoming the first repeat winner since Randy Johnson from 1999 to 2002. Lincecum was a bargain last year, when he made $650,000.
Lincecum also agreed yesterday to pay $513 to resolve marijuana charges against him in Washington State, stemming from a traffic stop on Oct. 30.

Hernandez asked for the second-highest figure, $11.5 million, and the Mariners offered $7.2 million. He is due in Seattle for a physical needed to finalize his contract, a source said.
